Ok so I finally succumbed and tried to make food on a stick! Everyone is doing it these days, cake pops, pie pops etc so I decided to try. Now I can only say that this recipe had mixed success. The pies themselves tasted delicious, which I guess is what matters but it was nearly impossible to get them to stay on the sticks! I used plastic sticks rather than paper because they were stronger but they slid out of the pies when they were cooked. For the life of me I can’t find any websites that give you tips on how to stop this so if anyone knows please let me know!

In the meantime I’ll let you know how I made the filling. I made apple pie pops for my recipe and used two cooking apples to make the filling. I cut the apple into fairly small pieces so it would fit easily inside the pastry. Don’t make them too small though because it will disintegrate a little on cooking. I added the apple to a heated pan along with a small splash of water, a health sprinkling of golden caster sugar, cinnamon, mixed spice and a spoon of flour to thicken. I cooked this down until the mixture was thick and golden. Remember to taste along the way as some apples can be really sour! I sandwiched the mixture between two discs of pastry and coated with egg, and crimped to seal. I placed these on a greased baking tray and cooked in the oven at 180C for about 15 minutes or until golden brown! If I could get the pies to stay on sticks I think they would be great to dip in warm custard!
